Spring Fence Maintenance Tips in Boise, ID

After a long winter here in the Treasure Valley with repeated teasing signs of warmer weather, our team at Certified Fencing is excited to finally have turned the corner towards spring! This season brings with it the new life that erupts this time each year, and the freshness of the winter thaw often translates into spring cleaning and preparing properties for the summer months as people spend more time outside. Today, we’ll be sharing general fence maintenance tips that apply to any fence material to help you as you prepare for this year:

  1. Fence Inspection. Regardless of the type of fence you have, it’s a good idea to conduct a thorough visual inspection of your fence at least once or twice a year, and spring is as good a time as any to do so. Keep a sharp eye out for any areas that are damaged in any way, or any missing or broken pieces. Damaged fences tend to get worse over time, and especially headed into months of sun exposure and exposure to sprinklers means you want to make sure your fence is in tip top condition right at the beginning of the season. Other things to look out for include loose or missing hardware, dents, scratches, or nicks that may need to be filled, and signs of rust on wrought iron fences.

  1. Prune nearby bushes and shrubs. Bushes and shrubs are often planted right along fence lines. We love this look! It’s aesthetic and adds life to a property while maximizing space. However, this kind of vegetation thrives best when it has room to grow, and overgrowth that winds itself around or grows into your fence can damage it. Long-term contact with branches, seeds, leaves, pine needles, and more can retain moisture and cause damages, and a good springtime pruning can reduce the odds of this kind of damage.

  1. Beware of tree branches. As you deal with nearby vegetation, don’t forget to look up! Overhanging tree branches can be a threat to fencing, and many trees may be partially broken or damaged from snow and ice or from repeated freezing and thawing. We recommend removing overhanging limbs before they fall; falling branches are especially damaging to vinyl fences, but other fencing types can be heavily impacted depending on the size of the branch as well. Spring is an excellent time to be extra vigilant and consider whether any trees on your property are within falling distance and whether trimming branches might prevent major issues in the future.

  1. Wash your fence. It’s good practice to wash your fence a couple times a year. For most fence types, using a gentle cleanser with a cloth can quickly and efficiently remove debris, dust, dirt, and bugs from the fence, and a brush can be applied to more stubborn stains. Other fence types--like chain link or cedar wood--can be hosed down or pressure washed to quickly get a clean look. Be aware of your fence type, as wrought iron or aluminum may do best with a waxing or re-sealing. Regardless of fence material, an annual fence washing can freshen up your property and create a sense of revival.

  1. Conduct needed repairs. Once you’ve thoroughly identified everything that your fence needs, you can go ahead and conduct any do-it-yourself repairs you can handle, and call in a professional for any that are out of your comfort zone. If your fence is missing pieces or has damaged hardware, you can typically order these parts online or at a local hardware store. Oftentimes, fencing professionals can also help you identify pieces and parts, and even order and install missing pieces for you. Taking care of these tasks prior to the summer season can let you enjoy the warmer months in peace.
