Three Common Fencing Mistakes to Avoid

Adding a fence to your property is an exciting time! Adding fencing is often one of the last touches before completing your dream property, and at Certified Fencing, we love getting to participate in that great accomplishment. However, installing a fence comes with a lot of considerations. Here are three common fencing mistakes we see here in Boise, Idaho:

1) Incorrect Placement

Building a fence seems relatively simple: just figure out where you want to put it, and install the fence. A mistake that we see all too frequently is when a fence is placed without making sure that the property lines are absolutely crystal clear. There are few worse mistakes than completing an installation and finding out after the fact that you've built the fence on your neighbor's property--or that you cut a few off of your own yard! At Certified Fencing, we will walk you through every step of your fence planning to make sure we do it right the first time.

2) Inconvenient Gates

Gates increase the usability of your yard, but the spot you reflexively plan to put your gate may not be the most convenient location. Because a gate places a hanging weight on the fence, it's critical to place the gate where the fence has a lot of strength. Additionally, if you plan to put an RV, boat, or other large gadget in your yard, you will need to consider whether the large gate you install allows an adequate angle and space to maneuver from the driveway into the parking space.

3) Inadequate Planning

Many fencing materials--like vinyl or aluminum--come in sections of fence, making them a little less flexible. If the dimensions of your fence don't fall perfectly into the sizes these fences make, you will need to plan in advance to custom order a section of fence to perfectly enclose your yard. It's an easy mistake to make, but "measure twice, cut once" is a phrase that definitely applies to fencing.

Additionally, it's important to be proactive and find out where utility lines and sewage pipes are laid. Running into a pipe or wire when installing a fence post can complicate more than just laying the fence, so it's critical to do your research and have this information at hand when installing a fence.

We hope this list of three common fencing mistakes helps prepare you for the potential pitfalls of installing a fence! At Certified Fencing, our priority is to serve our clients and friends here in the Boise area. If you need additional information or help, give us a call at (208) 449-2040!
