Cedar or Vinyl: Which is a Better Privacy Fence?

It's common for our clients living in Boise, Meridian, Nampa and surrounding areas to live in neighborhoods where a privacy fence will allow you and your family to more fully enjoy your property. Privacy fences allow you, your family, and your guests to enjoy the whether in your yard without having to worry about being seen, and they also block your view into your neighbors' yards as well. The two most common materials to build a privacy fence are cedar and vinyl.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Cedar
Cedar wood has been popular for fencing for many, many years; in fact, it's one of the most popular materials to use for fences out there. Unlike vinyl, cedar fences are typically sourced from sustainable sources, and the nature of the material is a definite win for the ecologically conscious consumer. Of the various types of wood used for fences, cedar is a stand-out candidate due to the fact that it's a hardwood and naturally resistant to rot, mold, and insects. Cedar has stood the test of time and gives a home a natural, cozy feel to it.

The disadvantage of cedar as a privacy fence is that it is a natural material; as the fence ages, knots in the wood may come loose and it's much more difficult to produce a seamless fit between each slat. If you need a fence that will block out every possibility of being seen, cedar may not be the best option for you.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Vinyl
Conversely, vinyl--also called PVC--can be used to create fences that fit together seamlessly, providing a near-perfect privacy from eye level. Additionally, the plastic nature of vinyl gives makes it very easy to clean with a quick rinse and keeping the fence looking brand new for many years. Many newer neighborhoods use vinyl; it's an aesthetic and practical choice for the modern American family.

On the flip side, vinyl is not nearly as eco-friendly as cedar; it's a plastic, which means that it may take a very long time to break down once it's no longer needed as a fence. Additionally, if the fence is damaged, an entire panel may need to be replaced, leading to more waste.

All in all, both cedar and vinyl are excellent options for a residential privacy fence. Depending on your specific needs and preferences, one material may be more suited to your property. When considering only the aspect of privacy, vinyl has higher odds of providing completely privacy over cedar, which provides a close alternative.
